How Myrton's Folly got it's name

Do you believe in the Little People?

Once upon a time, long, long, ago, when the world was flat, there lived four families. They were the Myrs, the Nas, the Tons and the Ys. These families lived in a beautiful, bountiful land of trees and flowers and the birds sang all day long. They were very happy.

Until, one day, when they were sitting around in the sunshine one of the Nas said “We live in this beautiful, bountiful land surrounded by flowers and trees and we want for nothing but what is beyond our borders where no one has dared to go?”
To this one of the Ys replied “Yes, I sometimes wonder what is beyond our world. Should we find out? Should we journey beyond our known world and see what is out there?”
“Oh, that sounds very dangerous and foolish.“ replied one of the Myrs.
“How could you ever want to leave this beautiful land?” replied one of the Tons.
“Well,” said one of the Nas, “I am prepared to venture forth and see for myself. Are you coming with me Ys?”
“Yes,” said the Ys in unison. “We will come with you”.
So the Ys and the Nas set off to see what was beyond their world.

The Myrs and the Tons scoffed among themselves. They saw no reason to leave their beautiful land but they were also curious. “I know what we must do” said one of the Myrs. “We will build a mountain. A high, high mountain. Then we can climb to the top and we will be able to see beyond our world. We don’t need to journey on foot for days. We will be able to see the world beyond from right here!”

So the Myrs and the Tons worked very hard and they dug and dug and gradually built their mountain.

“There, “ said one of the Myrs one day, “ Now we have this tall mountain. Let’s climb to the top and see the world beyond. So they all climbed to the top of their new mountain and admired the view. They could see far to the west the grove of flowering Cherry trees. To the north they could see the Red Oak and to the east the orchard full of fruits. Finally to the south they could see the line of Ash trees.

“There is our world. Isn’t it beautiful?” and the Myrs and the Tons sighed with pleasure at this wonderful world. “What’s more,” said one of the Tons, as they scrambled back down from their new mountain, “We have created this wonderful playground at the foot of our mountain.”
“Yes, “ said one of the Myrs we can play here when the weather is fine with boules of steel and enjoy ourselves.”

Over the years the mountain has diminished somewhat to the mound you see today but a fine Petanque piste lies ready in wait for the next game to begin. And that’s the story of how Myrton’s Folly got its name.

The Nas and the Ys were, sadly, never heard of again.

If you believe in the little people, on starry moonlit nights you will see the Myrs and the Tons running up their mountain to admire the view and playing boule on the piste below.
